In what is being called a major wager for the AI industry, NVIDIA is set to purchase Hugging Face in a $12.93 billion deal. It is the company’s most significant foray beyond its chip business, an effort to buy one of the open AI ecosystem’s key hubs.
The New York-based platform and model hub has been put under contract by NVIDIA in what is one of the AI sector’s largest acquisitions to date. For the firm, it is the clearest sign yet of an intent to make inroads into the software, developer and model space.

The terms of the agreement see NVIDIA handing over some $11.9 billion to Hugging Face shareholders, with another $1 billion in equity on the table for staff that come over as part of a retention plan. That puts a $12.93 billion price tag on Hugging Face, almost triple the $4.5 billion it was worth during its Series D in 2023, in which NVIDIA was an investor with $235 million. All being well with regulators and other conditions, the close is slated for the first half of 2027.
Hugging Face Will Remain Open and Neutral After the Acquisition
Hugging Face will be kept open, at least for the time being. There have been questions as to whether the acquisition would change the platform’s multi-vendor stance, but both sides are adamant that it will stay neutral and independently run. The three founders, Clément Delangue, Thomas Wolf and Julien Chaumond, will move to NVIDIA to keep the brand going. “We will remain independent and neutral,” said co-founder and CTO Julien Chaumond.
