With the state Cabinet’s 9 September 2026 approval of a ₹35 crore Artificial Intelligence Hub at IIIT-B, Karnataka has put its plans for an AI university into action. The hub at the International Institute of Information Technology, Bengaluru is to serve as the first operational piece of the proposed Karnataka Artificial Intelligence University (KAIU).
Priyank M Kharge, the state’s Electronics, IT/BT and Home Minister, has called it the first concrete building block of the AI university ecosystem. And in practical terms, the facility is set to make a difference: for students and job seekers there will be swifter access to AI training that is in line with industry needs; for startups, it means incubation, mentorship and funding are now within reach; while researchers and businesses can rely on the infrastructure to move their AI solutions from the experimental stage to actual deployment.
Karnataka’s AI Hub Brings Skills, Startups and Research Together
Housed at IIIT-B for the time being, the Karnataka AI Hub will put advanced research, entrepreneurship and skilling on a single integrated platform before eventually making way for the full-fledged KAIU.
What the ₹35 Crore Hub Means for Students, Startups and Industry
Its programmes are meant to bridge the divide between what is taught in academia and what the industry demands, offering finishing-school type certification to graduates and those looking for work. On the entrepreneurial side, the AI Startup and Entrepreneurship Hub will give innovators the market access and connections they need to scale their AI-based ventures. There will also be an AI Living Lab with the necessary compute and testbeds so that companies, government agencies and others can validate their work in a real-world setting. All of this is underpinned by technical facilities, seed funding and modular programmes for early-stage ventures.
The AI Hub Will Lay the Groundwork for Karnataka’s AI University
In many ways the hub is a forerunner to KAIU, which Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar put forward earlier in 2026 as part of a wider AI strategy for the state. A consultation committee of 29, under the chairmanship of Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan, is charting the university’s course. At its inaugural session on 6 September, the group was occupied with rolling out some immediate skilling initiatives and drawing up a phased plan for the university, which will be home to postgraduate and postdoctoral work as well as applied R&D.
In the interim, the hub will handle executive education, reskilling and diplomas via academic-industry ties.
Karnataka’s AI Strategy Goes Beyond Building a University
This is not an isolated move. The AI Hub fits into a state-wide approach that encompasses a ₹200 crore fund of funds for AI-centric startups, the Nipuna Edge skilling programme and work on a responsible AI policy, among other things.
For Karnataka, then, the IIIT-B hub is intended to be something more than a training ground. It is the first node to link the government, industry, research and education in support of the state’s AI ambitions, well before the university itself is in place.
