With a €3 billion infusion at a valuation topping €21 billion, Mistral AI has put Europe’s AI aspirations to the test and won.

The French lab, which is only in its third year of existence, has closed a Series D round that it claims is the biggest equity raise ever for a private European tech company. The sum comes to roughly $3.5 billion in U.S. terms, with a post-money figure of some $24 billion.

Mistral AI’s €3 Billion Round: Who Is Betting on Europe’s AI Future?

What is as noteworthy as the amount is who is putting up the money. Samsung Electronics is making its debut as an investor in Mistral with a reported commitment of some €1 billion. Co-leading the round are existing backer PSG Equity and the Scaleup Europe Fund, an EU-backed operation run by EQT in what is its inaugural investment. The list of new and old capital also features Advent, BlackRock-managed accounts and funds, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and others.

Mistral AI Has the Revenue Growth to Back Its $24 Billion Valuation

Mistral is not simply riding on the strength of this funding. Johan Bergqvist, the company’s CFO, said in an interview with Reuters that annual recurring revenue was already over $400 million as of February 2026. With more uptake from the public sector and enterprise clients, the firm expects to be at $1 billion in ARR before the year is out. By those metrics of growth and value, Bergqvist would have you consider Mistral the fastest-growing company in Europe and the second most highly valued private tech group on the continent.

Where Mistral AI Will Put Its New €3 Billion War Chest

The new money is earmarked for advancing frontier AI research and shoring up the company’s models. A key part of that is the sovereign, open-weight strategy which lets a customer take the model and run it on their own hardware after downloading and customising it. It is an appeal to governments and large enterprises looking to keep a tight rein on their data and infrastructure.

Mistral intends to build on its European foothold and grow its presence in North America and Asia as well.

Why Mistral’s Funding Round Matters for Europe’s AI Ambitions

In many ways, Mistral is putting itself forward as a home-grown answer to the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic across the Atlantic. There is a certain logic to the timing; European investors and officials are keen to develop their own capabilities and wean themselves off US and Chinese cloud and AI providers.

Samsung’s stake offers a link to a heavyweight in chips and devices, while Mistral’s open-weight approach provides an alternative for those with stringent security needs. In a year the company has seen its valuation go from about €12 billion to where it is now. For Europe, this is more than a headline-making deal. It is evidence that the continent means to play in the frontier AI space on its own terms, and that there is plenty of capital ready to back it.
