Sovereign AI India

With India’s AI ecosystem moving into uncharted territory, investors are putting their money behind the foundational technologies of tomorrow as much as the applications of today. In a move that underscores this trend, Activate has put in a strategic investment with Sarvam AI to bolster the country’s drive for sovereign AI innovation.

The Bengaluru startup is in the midst of its Series B round and has welcomed Activate as a backer. It is an endorsement of the view held by Activate that artificial intelligence will be “one of the largest technology shifts of our generation”. More than that, it is a vote of confidence in India to put forward world-class research and products built for the local enterprise and industry landscape.

Activate Bets on India’s Next Wave of AI Growth

Activate’s stake comes as part of Sarvam AI’s $300 million Series B plan, putting a roughly $1.5 billion valuation on the firm. The news comes on the heels of Sarvam making public an extra $75 million from Nvidia, Glade Brook Capital and Gaja Capital; the first close in June had already brought in $234 million.

Reports have it that Activate has committed some $15 million via a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) set up for growth-stage AI prospects, as opposed to its main early-stage fund. For the firm, which was established by Aakrit Vaish, Pratyush Choudhury and Soaib Grewal to run a $75 million AI-centric book, Sarvam is the third such major growth-stage play after ElevenLabs and Wispr Flow.

Why Sarvam AI Fits Activate’s India-First AI Vision

There is a sense at Activate that India can get ahead of the pack in the next wave of AI by developing its own foundational tech rather than depending on global platforms. Sarvam is well aligned with that thinking.

Under the direction of co-founders Dr. Pratyush Kumar and Dr. Vivek Raghavan, the company is constructing a full-stack sovereign platform with voice AI and reasoning systems made for Indian languages. They are also working with the Government of India on the IndiaAI Mission to further indigenous large language models. Before this latest round, the likes of Lightspeed, Peak XV and Khosla Ventures had already put in close to $54 million.

Beyond Funding: Building India’s AI Ecosystem Together

The relationship between the two companies is not limited to the balance sheet. Activate and Sarvam intend to put their efforts toward shoring up the local AI ecosystem, giving early-stage startups the infrastructure and know-how they need. On the enterprise side, the focus will be on helping businesses roll out sovereign AI for complex, multilingual applications.

There is also an emphasis on talent, with plans for internships and academic work to link researchers with practical AI development. As capital makes its way into foundational AI, such a partnership shows how India’s ambitions are becoming more of an ecosystem affair. For Sarvam, Activate offers the kind of long-term support and operator expertise that goes beyond writing a check; for Activate, it is about building the next tier of globally competitive Indian AI firms from the ground up.
