Bezos Is Back in the CEO’s Chair

The former Amazon head is not looking to assemble another e-commerce empire this time around. Instead, he is placing his bet on AI to transform the design and manufacture of tangible goods. Bezos has taken up an operational leadership position as co-CEO of Prometheus, the US AI startup for engineering and manufacturing, with Vik Bajaj at his side. Bajaj, who co-founded Verily and once led Google X, is sharing the helm. It is the first time Bezos has held a CEO title since he left the top post at Amazon in 2021.

Prometheus Raises $12 Billion at a $41 Billion Valuation

The numbers behind the venture are telling. In its latest round of financing, Prometheus has put together $12 billion from backers such as JPMorgan Chase, BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, DST Global, Arch Venture Partners and Bezos. That brings the post-money valuation to some $41 billion, on top of the $6.2 billion it started with. For a firm of only 150 staff, that is a valuation of roughly $273 million an employee, which says something about what investors expect from frontier AI.

Taking AI Beyond Chatbots and Into the Physical World

Where others in the AI boom have been preoccupied with chatbots and digital productivity, Bezos is interested in what he terms the “physical economy.” Prometheus is set to make inroads in aerospace, automotive, semiconductors and advanced industrial production, and perhaps pharmaceuticals. The idea is to put AI to work at every stage of the engineering process, be it simulation, testing or optimisation.

The Ambition: An “Artificial General Engineer”

The end game is an “Artificial General Engineer” that can handle open-ended problems of a complexity that would normally demand large teams and years of effort. A system like that would be able to take in requirements, put components through their paces in a simulation, spot flaws and even come up with manufacturing instructions based on real-world test data.

Accelerating the “Dream-Build Loop”

Bezos and Bajaj refer to it as the “dream-build loop,” and they want to put some speed into it. By tying together generative design, physics-based modelling and digital twins, an aircraft part could be run through several variations and refined for manufacturability in short order, giving engineers more to work with.

Why Prometheus Is Betting Big on AI Talent

To pull it off, Prometheus has gone after the best from OpenAI, Meta and Google DeepMind, amassing a roster with know-how in robotics, computer vision and materials science. But the task is no small one. An AI may produce a convincing simulation, but in the physical realm the product has to be safe, reliable and compliant with regulation.

From AI Ideas to Real-World Products

It is a new sort of operating bet for Bezos: to use AI to cut the distance between an idea and a finished product. Should he be right, the Artificial General Engineer will be a formidable addition to the industrial economy, allowing for a level of precision and speed in complex systems that was not there before.
