With the help of Mindgrove Technologies and AtumX, India has seen a new chapter in its semiconductor story with the introduction of AGNI. Hailed as the country’s first indigenous developer board to run on a homegrown chip, the launch is a notable milestone for the local electronics and innovation ecosystem. It is also evidence of how the nation’s ambitions in this space are making their way from policy papers into the classroom. 

The project is set to be piloted in five government schools in Chennai under the aegis of the Atal Innovation Mission, putting the technology in the hands of close to 1,000 students. But AGNI is more than a product; it is an attempt to put India’s own semiconductor technology before students at the outset of their engineering careers so that future innovators can be nurtured on domestic hardware. 

AGNI Brings Homegrown Semiconductor Learning to Classrooms 

At the heart of the board is Mindgrove’s Secure IoT SoC, which is both owned and designed in India and stands as the nation’s first commercial-grade, high-performance microcontroller. Such evaluation boards give engineers and learners a tangible way to write, test and debug software on the hardware itself, or to hook up peripherals like motors and displays for everything from basic IoT work to complex embedded systems. 

Previously, an Indian student would have had to make do with imported platforms such as Raspberry Pi or Arduino. AGNI provides a Made-in-India substitute for that kind of hands-on work.

Mindgrove and AtumX Build a Complete Learning Ecosystem 

The effort is the result of a partnership between two Indian tech firms. Mindgrove, a fabless startup incubated by IIT Madras, has the pedigree of having created the SoC and designing chips for automotive and vision applications. Their Chennai counterpart, edtech firm AtumX, brings an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) to the table that is made for the learner. With it, a student can start with block-based programming and move on to text-based coding and AI in a natural progression. The combination of the two creates a full-fledged ecosystem for mastering software, firmware and hardware on one platform. 

Why AGNI Matters for India’s Semiconductor Future 

There is a clear rationale for why AGNI is important to India’s technology future. On a practical level, it gives students a curriculum-friendly way to develop skills in AI and electronics on Indian-designed silicon. More broadly, it is a move toward self-reliance. 

“Today a student might be learning on an Indian chip, but down the line he could be the one building college projects or founding a startup on our silicon,” says Shashwath T R, co-founder and CEO of Mindgrove. 

Akash J of AtumX puts it in terms of authorship: “AGNI is the first chapter of India’s indigenous technology story written by the students themselves.” 

Backed by the Atal Innovation Mission, the companies intend to take AGNI to more government schools in the coming months, using feedback from the classroom to fine tune the hardware and IDE. There are plans for student competitions and community innovation projects as well. In many ways, AGNI shows that India’s path to technological self-reliance is being forged in the classroom where tomorrow’s engineers will do their building and innovating, rather than just within the factory walls.
