With all the chatter about AI coworkers, it is worth noting that most business teams still turn to spreadsheets for their key analysis. Databricks is set to change that dynamic by uniting the two.

In a move announced 24 September 2026, the company has made an acquisition of Row Zero, the Seattle startup behind a cloud spreadsheet platform tied to live, governed enterprise data. The deal will give Genie, Databricks’ AI coworker, a new spreadsheet interface so teams can do their modelling and collaborating on current data in one place, rather than having to export it to some disconnected file.

Why Spreadsheets Still Matter in the AI Era

Spreadsheets have a way of persisting in the age of AI. Row Zero is no stranger to those who are used to Excel or Google Sheets, with its pivot tables, charts and formulas. But there is a distinction in what lies beneath. Where one might normally work from a static CSV export, Row Zero is hooked up to the source, so the numbers in the sheet are always up to date. And because of its governance controls, user permissions are observed and every interaction is auditable.

It is a solution to the enterprise headache of “shadow spreadsheets” – those files created from exports that are hard to track and out of step with the organisation’s framework. Founded by ex-Tableau and AWS engineers, Row Zero has already put its platform to the test with Databricks’ own finance team for large-scale modelling of over a million rows.

Taking Genie From AI Answers to Hands-On Analysis

The idea is to get Genie out of the chat window and into hands-on work. A user might pose a question like “What drove the margin shift last quarter?” and then be able to go straight to a live spreadsheet to put the numbers to the test or work with a colleague. For the likes of finance, sales and operations, where day-to-day decisions are made in rows and columns, that is of particular value.

Keeping AI-Powered Spreadsheet Work Governed

All of this is underpinned by Databricks’ governance architecture. Unity Catalog and Genie Ontology will provide the necessary context and control over metrics, while Unity Gateway puts policy enforcement and auditing in place for AI agents. In short, users and AI can make use of the data without any ambiguity as to where it came from or who has access to it.

Turning Genie Into a Practical AI Coworker

Databricks sees this as more than just another interface for Genie; it is about making the AI coworker a practical part of actual business workflows. While the price and a firm launch date have not been put forward, the plan is to roll Row Zero’s experience into Genie on web, desktop and mobile. The message to the enterprise is straightforward: AI is altering the landscape, but you still need your tools. By marrying AI with a governed, live spreadsheet, Databricks is making advanced analysis available without the risk of uncontrolled files.
