TCS acquires MHP

TCS and Porsche put the pedal to the metal on their AI plans with a new five-year pact.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has formalised a strategic alliance with Porsche AG to provide AI services throughout the automaker’s mobility value chain. In a related development, TCS is set to acquire 100 per cent of MHP, the German management and IT consulting arm of Porsche.

The figures behind the arrangement are telling. TCS will put down some €320 million (in the region of $373 million) for MHP in an all-cash deal at that enterprise value. On the other side, Porsche has put its name to a €1.25 billion (or roughly $1.45 billion) five-year contract for services that span AI, software-defined mobility and IT modernisation.

What Does the TCS-Porsche Deal Include?

When the acquisition of MHP is finalised in the next three or four months, pending the usual regulatory sign-offs, TCS will be taking on some 4,500 of the subsidiary’s staff. MHP is no small operation; it reported revenues of some €742 million and has a client list of over 300, not least among them major names in the auto industry. For TCS, this is about more than headcount; it is an opportunity to gain MHP’s automotive know-how and its entrenched position in Germany.

How Porsche Plans to Put AI to Work

At the heart of the partnership is the establishment of an AI Mobility Centre of Excellence for Porsche. The aim is to take AI out of the experimental phase and develop use cases into secure, scalable solutions for the company’s worldwide operations. The centre will see AI put to work in several areas:

  • In manufacturing for quality control, predictive maintenance and optimising production
  • In engineering to aid design, simulation and the development of software-defined vehicles
  • In operations to automate the back office, logistics and the supply chain
  • In customer experience to deliver connected-car features and personalised digital services

Why the TCS-Porsche AI Partnership Matters

There is clear logic to the tie-up. “It will help industrialise AI at scale for Porsche,” says TCS chief K Krithivasan. Michael Leiters, CEO of Porsche, sees it as a way to fortify the firm’s innovation as data and software come to dominate mobility.

What the Deal Means for the Future of Software-Defined Mobility

In broader terms, the agreement is a statement of intent from both sides. It is TCS’s second European mega-deal in less than eight months and cements its standing in one of the continent’s key auto markets. But it also reflects a trend among automakers to look to technology partners for embedding AI in everything from the factory floor to the vehicle itself. With cars growing ever more software-driven, such collaborations will be what separates those who can make AI work at scale from the rest.
