AI Agents Can Now Identify Themselves and Pay

With Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.pay, an AI agent can be given a verifiable identity and a programmable wallet. The premise is simple: let the agent locate a service, see to its payment and finish the job for you, all without handing over open access to your funds. 

This new infrastructure layer from Cloudflare is meant to endow autonomous agents with both persistent digital identities and the means to pay in a controlled manner. It is a question that is coming to the fore as AI agents grow more adept at navigating websites, making API calls and running multi-step processes: how does one ensure they are operating safely on behalf of a person or company? 

Giving AI Agents a Verifiable Identity 

The internet has largely been built for humans, with their need for accounts, passwords and manual sign-offs. Cloudflare is working to change that so agents can identify themselves and transact. A Cloudflare account will have a unique web address to act as a stable identifier; users may then extend that to an AI agent so online services know who put it there. An organisation might, for instance, give a research agent an identity like research.example.cloudflare.pay via cloudflare.pay. 

It allows a business to tell the difference between unverified automated traffic and an agent with proper authorisation. And should an agent wish to keep its identity to itself, it can do so.

Programmable Wallets Put Limits on AI Spending 

There are Account Wallets for the individual or firm and Virtual Wallets for the agent itself. The latter come with spending controls. One can dictate the types of resources an agent is allowed to buy, cap the value of any single transaction or set an overall limit and choose which merchants are approved. 

In the event an agent is compromised, makes an error or comes across an unforeseen cost, those preset boundaries serve to contain the financial fallout, which is no small thing when decisions are being made at scale. 

AI Agents Can Pay for Compute, Data and APIs 

For machine-to-machine transactions, the system relies on the x402 protocol and stablecoins. This opens the door to purchasing subscription services, premium API access, MCP tools or compute power. Stablecoins are well suited to the kind of small, regular payments that would be inefficient to run through a card network. 

Cloudflare is rolling this out in phases. In the months ahead one can expect full payment functionality and the ability to fund wallets and issue Virtual Wallets, though for now users can put in a reservation for a handle. 

What Cloudflare’s Move Means for the Agentic Web 

What Cloudflare is putting in place is part of a move toward agentic commerce, where AI has the authority to make decisions and transact. For a business, having a verified agent identity brings transparency to automated traffic and confirms if an agent is representing a bona fide customer. On the user side, it could mean an agent can go about its business of researching and buying without needing a hand to approve every move. 

More AI Autonomy Brings New Security Challenges 

But with that autonomy comes security obligations. Firms will have to be on top of credentials and spending policies. To that end, Cloudflare is also building out cryptographic verification and Web Bot Auth to hold automated activity to account. 

In the final analysis, Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.pay are not just about the money. They are the essential components of accountability and identity for a time when AI agents are fully authorised to take part in online commerce.
