In a move aimed at improving enterprise AI safety, OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Promptfoo, a widely used open-source platform that helps developers evaluate and secure artificial intelligence systems. The acquisition was revealed on March 9 through an official announcement and will integrate Promptfoo’s capabilities into OpenAI’s Frontier platform, enhancing security features for large-scale AI deployments.

Promptfoo has quickly gained recognition among developers and enterprises for its ability to test and evaluate large language models (LLMs). Founded in 2024 by Ian W. and Michael D’Angelo, the platform focuses on automated testing tools that detect vulnerabilities before AI systems go live. These tools allow development teams to identify risks such as prompt injection attacks, hallucinated responses, and unsafe outputs that may occur when AI models interact with users.

The platform’s open-source command-line interface and libraries have become popular among developers who build AI applications. Promptfoo is particularly known for enabling “red-teaming” processes, where teams intentionally test AI models with adversarial prompts to uncover weaknesses. This approach helps organizations strengthen the safety and reliability of AI systems before deployment.

Promptfoo’s tools are already widely used across industries including finance, healthcare, and technology. According to available data, more than 25 percent of Fortune 500 companies use the platform to evaluate AI systems. Its rapid adoption highlights the growing demand for reliable testing frameworks as organizations deploy AI chatbots and automated systems in real-world environments.

With this acquisition, OpenAI plans to embed Promptfoo’s security and evaluation capabilities directly into Frontier, the company’s platform designed for building and managing AI agents. These agents are often described as “AI coworkers” because they can assist with tasks such as research, customer service, and data analysis. By integrating Promptfoo, OpenAI aims to provide stronger safeguards for enterprises that rely on AI-driven workflows.

The integration will introduce several advanced features into the Frontier platform. These include automated red-teaming tools, security testing for AI agent workflows, compliance monitoring systems, and improved reporting features designed for governance and oversight. Such capabilities are expected to help organizations manage risk and maintain transparency when deploying AI solutions at scale.

OpenAI confirmed that Promptfoo will continue to remain open source even after the acquisition. The company also plans to expand enterprise-level capabilities while maintaining access for the broader developer community. Promptfoo’s founders echoed this commitment in a public statement, noting that the platform will continue serving both users and customers while benefiting from OpenAI’s resources.

Promptfoo previously raised $23 million in funding and reached a valuation of $86 million during its Series A round in 2025. The funding round was led by major venture capital firms, including Insight Partners and Andreessen Horowitz. While the financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, the transaction is expected to close after customary regulatory and procedural approvals.

The deal also reflects a broader shift within the AI industry. As AI chatbots and automated systems become part of everyday business operations, security and compliance are becoming central concerns for companies and developers alike. OpenAI executives emphasized that evaluation and security frameworks are now foundational requirements for organizations deploying AI technologies in real workflows.

Industry analysts say the acquisition strengthens OpenAI’s enterprise strategy following the launch of its enterprise-focused AI products. Competition in the AI space is also intensifying, with major technology companies investing heavily in safer and more reliable AI infrastructure.

For developers and businesses building AI solutions, the addition of Promptfoo’s testing and evaluation tools could significantly improve how organizations validate AI systems before deployment. By combining open-source innovation with enterprise-grade security capabilities, OpenAI aims to set a stronger benchmark for safe and trustworthy AI development.

As the acquisition moves toward completion in the second quarter of 2026, the integration of Promptfoo into OpenAI’s ecosystem is expected to enhance security standards for AI chatbots, developer tools, and enterprise AI platforms across the industry.
